Kansai Summer Gathering: Sunny Day for Kansai

TOYONAKA, 20 July – MSAJ Kansai organised its Summer Gathering on 20 July at Hattori Ryokuchi Park, Toyonaka, bringing together more than 20 participants including students and families. The gathering was designed to be inclusive, following a recommendation from within the Malaysian community to open MSAJ events up to Malaysians across the Kansai region beyond just students.

The afternoon was originally meant to start earlier, but with Japan's summer heat showing no mercy, the team made the sensible call to push things to the evening instead, settling on a 2:30 pm start.

Setting up came first. Active members and volunteers from Ritsumeikan University arrived early to prepare the grounds, and it was Hanisah who managed to scout out a shaded spot perfect enough to spare everyone from the worst of the sun. As attendees began trickling in with their own contributions of food and drinks, a large picnic mat, generously brought along by a family from Kobe, was laid out, and soon enough, people, dishes, and drink coolers all found their place on it.

With time running short before the grills needed to get going, friends from Ritsumeikan University stepped in to help with the BBQ prep, bringing along their own carefully marinated chicken that ended up being one of the highlights of the spread, along with their special ‘Nasi Goreng’, which was the most delicious dish. Haziq Adli and Akif Irfan, in particular, took charge of the grilling. Special thanks are owed to Mrs Nadia Ridzy as well, whose help in finding this park in the first place made the whole gathering possible.

The evening unfolded with laughter, easy conversation, and kids running around enough to tire out every "kakak" present, which seems closer to a family day than an association event.

We're often told being around people is enough. But what we're really chasing is familiarity or the comfort of faces that understand the same jokes, crave the same food, and carry the same idea of home. For a few hours by the mat, from Shiga to Wakayama, that's exactly what this was: students, shakaijin, and families choosing to show up for each other. A small gathering, but perhaps a stepping stone toward something MSAJ Kansai can keep building on.
